DTL, NLF and SÅ together with 30 fellow road transport associations, including IRU, send open letter to EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier and to UK Chief Negotiator David Frost and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
In a 25 September open letter the 33 road transport associations urge for a compromise on road haulage.
“Road transport is a trade enabler whose contribution goes far beyond its considerable direct economic and employment footprint”, the signatories explain, adding that “the way forward lies in a reciprocal solution between the EU and the UK based on mutual recognition of standards, competences and certificates to provide for adequate safeguards in terms of fair competition, environmental performance, road safety and working conditions for drivers”. As 2.3 million trucks travel between the EU and the UK yearly, ending Brexit negotiations without an agreement on road transport is not an option for our industry, the signatories point out in the letter.
As we are fast approaching the end of the transition period, the road haulage signatories urge the negotiating parties to use the last stretch to “deliver an outcome that is economically sensible and allows the road transport industry to play its role as an essential trade enabler across all sectors of the economy”.
