Brexit and road haulage industry: extra costs and massive problems in case of “no deal”

The European Council will meet in Brussels on 17 and 18 October and in an EU  27 format, they will discuss the state of play regarding Brexit.

The road haulage associations we represent from France (FNTR), Belgium (FEBETRA), the Netherlands (TLN), Germany (BGL) and Nordic countries (NLA) would like to emphasize the following points:

If the UK leaves without an agreement, massive problems for international road hauliers are expected to last several months: with new checks required at the border and drivers not having the necessary paperwork, delays could be huge.

Nevertheless, given the Brexit uncertainty, the road haulage industry from our countries is prepared as much as the industry possibly could have. Needless to say, that despite all these efforts, serious problems could arise in the event of a “no deal” Brexit.

Road haulage sector is always flexible but needs to know what it is preparing for. The aim is also to give our clients as much certainty as possible.

We would therefore like to ask for the EU Heads of government to strive towards a deal with the UK during the European summit at the end of this week.
