Weights and dimensions Directive
The transport committee of the European Parliament voted on the 24 of February in favour of the compromise made between the European parliament and the Council of the European Union, on the revision of the weights and dimensions directive.
The agreement on the directive should see safer and more energy efficient trucks. The agreement allows longer and more aerodynamic cabins, which would lead to a better fuel efficiency for transport operations. After a moratorium of three years starting on the date of the adoption of the text, those cabins should be on the market as from 2020.
Rear flaps supporting the aerodynamic form of the truck at the back could be available as soon as the weights and dimensions directive is transposed by Member States, expected date in 2017.
Missing steps in the procedure are now the formal agreement in the Plenary of the European Parliament and the Council of the European union. The new rules are planned to be implemented in 2017.
